3T Writing Tidbit

Here are just a few quick rules of thumb.

What point of view (POV) should I use for a scene? When given the choice of multiple characters, choose the one who stands the most to lose or gain.

Is there an exception to that? Yes! If that character is not fully identifiable to readers. For example, the Sherlock Holmes stories are better in Dr. Watson's POV. We get a lot more out of the first Avengers movie by having big fanboy Agent Coulson interact with the superheroes.

When should I reveal a secret? When the revelation most screws up the POV character's life.

Published since 2009, over the years I've accumulated various items of writing wisdom. The Third Tuesday Writing Tidbit showcases these items in no particular order. Click here to see all 3T Tidbits.
