This is the time of year when I usually dust off my treadmill and try to remember that yoga pants are actually supposed to be used in a yoga class. I’ve started calling mine YouTube pants, because that’s what I do when I wear them. The endless videos don’t judge me.

I’m switching gears this year.

Literally.

I’m writing about gears.

Next month I’ve got a new novella out with Samhain Publishing called Coral-600. If you’ve read my books, you’re familiar with my sense of humor. So you might be able to understand why I couldn’t resist writing from the point-of-view of a 90-year-old virgin robot. She’s discovering what all her genetically modified tissue can do, and I had to hang on for the ride with her.

I sent this little nugget onto my editor and neither one of us really knew what to do with it, but we knew it was too much fun to let sit in my computer. It’s a sexy love story that just happens to involve a robot. Coral, our robo-main character, is determined to get what she needs out of life and can’t understand why others would want to deny her things that just plain feel good.

In 2015, I want to be more like the strong female characters I write about. I want to figure out what I want and go for it. I’m trying to get organized, but for now, I’m filling my writing space with beautiful quotes. I’m journaling every day, and I’m writing down more of the stories inside my head.

Hero--In or Out of the Shadows? --originally posted November 12, 2014

Who's your favorite book hero? Got him in your mind? Good. Now, what do you like about him? Is he honest, kind, caring? Brave, handsome, daring? Polite or a little rough?

Big question--would you put him in a white hat or black hat?

Do heroes always have to be good guys? I'm currently watching season one of The Blacklist, and so far, while the main hero does some pretty unnerving things, he has one redeeming quality--he always protects the heroine.

Yesterday saw the release of Assassins Bite, the eighth book in my Biting Love series of red-hot vampire romances with action and sass. It's a book I never meant to write, but my editor loved a secondary character, an assassin named Aiden, so much that she suggested--okay, twisted my arm a bit--that he have his own book.

The problem? Aiden Blackthorne was trained as an assassin by the most notorious vampire in the Midwest. He has one friend in the world and a whole lot of enemies. But he is brave, handsome, daring and kind, and most of all--he protects the heroine above all things.

Well, he tries. Police officer Sunny Ruffles doesn't think she needs protecting. But that's another story ;)

Recently a non-romance-reading friend of mine asked me what my upcoming book was about.  When I explained that Jaguar’s Kiss is a forbidden-love romance between the princess of a pride of lion shapeshifters and a sexy loner who shifts into a jaguar, the look he gave me could best be described as utter confusion.  He hadn’t been expecting big cats.  After some discussion, it became apparent my poor misguided friend couldn’t understand the appeal of shapeshifter romance, and I found myself in the position of trying to explain exactly why I find these stories so irresistible.

Was it the alpha male heroes?  They are so deliciously sexy—all power and authority and lovely bulgy muscles.  Dominant and determined and sexy and… *fans self*   Yeah.  What’s not to love?

Or is it the sensuality that naturally imbues a story about creatures that are so physical and possessing such heightened senses?  Shifters are dominated by instinct, in touch with their primal, animalistic sexual selves in a way that can be hot as hell.  Many shifter romances are written in a style that highlights that intense sensory body-awareness in a way that’s lush and vivid.  Hard to resist…

Or perhaps it’s the certainty involved in the popular fated mates trope in shifter romances?  The idea that there is a soul mate and when you find them you will sort of lock into place and there will be no doubt (and no questioning whether this is really the guy for you as you wade through the quagmire that human dating can be).  There’s a comfort in the feeling that the happily-ever-afters will make it all the way to the ever-after and when there’s a metaphysical mate-bond, it’s easy to believe they’re going to go the distance.

What do you think?  Why are shifters so dang sexy?  Alphas, animalism, mates?  All of the above?  Some other factor I haven’t considered?  The tight knit communities of packs and prides that exist in many of the books?  The sociopolitical elements of the shapeshifter worlds?  Or is just that we all dreamed of being able to transform into jaguars or wolves and run through the forest as kids (I know I did) and we never quite grew up?

March 1T Status Update -- It was all about the story

It is with a heavy heart that I tell you that Samhain Publishing, my first publishing home, has announced they're closing their doors over the next several months.

Man, I loved this place. It was home in more ways than one. The quirky warnings, the editors who actually got my sense of humor, the safe environment made this the publisher of my heart.

Mind Mates, which had been slated for August 23, is now in limbo. I expect my rights back shortly and will proceed with indie publishing to try to get this to you as close to the original release date as possible. Here was the gorgeous cover. I don't know if I'll get to keep it or not.

Okay, before I get all weepy again, here is the good news. April Fools For Love 2016 is trucking along and plans are on track (to mix my vehicular metaphors) for preorder release mid-March.

January 1T Status Update

Happy 2016 everyone!!

Have you seen the new Star Wars movie? I hope to have by the time this publishes. The original actors have aged--well, we ALL have, and aging sure beats the alternative--but it's as good a reminder as any that time marches on.

Shelly: I figured you all could use some tips in taking charge of your men. Since I’ve recently taken charge of two, you should listen to what I have to say.

1.       Sex. Let’s be honest, you can take charge of even the strongest Alpha Werewolf when you have his favorite honey pot on tap.

2.       Location, Location, Location. Having control of your man is difficult sometimes and a good vacation getaway with lots of rope to keep him there is always a good idea.

3.       Sharp wit, and sharper teeth.  Having a sense of humor is a great way to keep your men off balance. Throwing their heads back in laughter gives great access when you’re dying for a bite.

4.       Drama-free Zone. Everyone has drama in their family. Some much more than others. Taking charge of your men sometimes means helping eliminate some of the drama. Don’t be afraid to get your hands dirty when it’s for someone you care about.

5.       Highlighting your hot spots. After you’ve been mated, showing off the marks your mate seared into your skin is always a turn on. Show that shit off. Letting them think you belong to them is the first step in claiming your own territory.
