3T Writing Tidbit

Don't lose potential readers in the first two pages!

This tidbit was inspired by story master Michael Hauge. Hook readers by creating empathy for the point-of-view character within the first two pages. There are a number of ways to do this but surprisingly, only one is actually to make the character likeable.

Think about all the characters you find intriguing. Dr. Gregory House. Sherlock Holmes. Dr. Watson. What makes each of these compelling? Why would you follow them, root for them? Distill that into a trait then choose a way to demonstrate that trait in the first 2 pages of your manuscript.

Published since 2009, over the years I've accumulated various items of writing wisdom. The Third Tuesday Writing Tidbit showcases these items in no particular order. Click here to see all 3T Tidbits.
